Adult Dysphagia Training for Healthcare Professionals

The Adult Dysphagia Training for Healthcare Professionals module is designed to meet the needs of Registered Nurses, and other Health Care Professionals currently employed in an area, either in hospital or community setting, where patients experience swallowing problems.

This module provides an opportunity for healthcare professionals, who in their day to day activities meet patients with potential swallowing problem, to obtain the relevant knowledge and skills to manage patients' problems effectively. Successful management of patients with dysphagia is crucial to prevent problems such as aspiration pneumonia, and to provide nutrition in an appropriate form promoting optimal recovery. Therefore, this module will enable health care professionals to carry out a competent assessment of a patient's swallowing status, his/her nutritional needs and manage uncomplicated problems. In addition healthcare professionals must be able to identify complicated swallowing problems which require referral to a Speech & Language Therapist.

Students must have a signed agreement from a Speech and Language Therapist that is prepared to support them through their clinical practice competencies.

Target audience

Theory Components of modules are suitable to all professions.
Full academic credit only available for those students who are able to complete the practice part.

Assessment

A 1500 word critical analysis of the assessment and management of a patient with swallowing difficulties.
Practice competencies to include two swallow assessments.
