Specialist Clinical Practice in Palliative Care

Specialist palliative care practitioners have a responsibility to widely disseminate research and evidence to optimise patient care and to support those giving palliative interventions of a non-specialist nature.
Whilst the module is not at Masters level it enables the student to begin to explore, analyse and clarify elements of practice by defining roles, levels of expertise and activity.
Students are required to makes explicit connections between the module content, their private study and their practice to meet learning outcomes. The module is rooted within specialist palliative care and has relevance for those keen to develop their practice.

Assessment
The module will be assessed by an assignment of 6,000 words incorporating narratives of specialist practice.Outline content
- Understanding and exploring factual knowledge in palliative care
- Application of research in clinical situations
- Taking responsibility in specialist practice
- Initiating and implementing protocols, policies and care pathways
- Educating clients, improving independence, self-care ability and autonomy
- Resourcing issues in complex dynamics, patho-physiology and identified risk
- Improved interpersonal communication
- The politics of advocacy in specialist practice
- The psycho-dynamics of specialist teams
