Clinical Assessment Skills for Health Professionals

This module offers nurses & AHPs the opportunity to enhance their existing knowledge and skills through a programme that integrates theory and practice in order to acquire the competencies required to provide a same day consultation service for patients. Ongoing support and supervision is integral to the role development, as is audit to ensure safe effective practice and to plan future development.

Programme Content

Developing Clinical Assessment Skills
Physical examination skills of all body systems, focusing on adults but relating to children and infants also. Use of diagnostic equipment, interpretation of investigations

Framework for professional Practice
Legal and professional issues of advanced practice. Evidence based practice, protocols, guidelines, reflective practice, and record keeping.

Communication and Psycho-Social Aspects of health care
Influences on health status and health behaviour, communication skills, history taking, record keeping, clinical decision-making skills, and management of change.

Assessment of common conditions/injuries
Consultation assessment of common conditions/injuries.

Assessment

Level 6 (Formerly Level 3):
1) Diagnostic case presentation
2) Learning Log (including 4000 word reflective account and practice assessment)
