Children and Bereavement

Level 6

30 Credits

The nursing and healthcare professions are acutely aware of the special needs of children who are grieving. Indeed, children's perceptions of death and their subsequent ability to cope with the experience of bereavement are influenced by a number of factors, including the events leading up to the death of a loved one. This is where the informed nurse or other health and social care worker can play an important part in the child's emotional health and wellbeing.

The module aims to critically examine the developmental issues in the child's concept of loss and grief, factors influencing bereavement outcomes in children, the role of social networks in the support of the grieving child, and the nature of vulnerability.
