Cervical Screening Theory and Practice

This course will provide the skills necessary for competent and effective cervical screening. Analysis of the national screening programme, cervical screening techniques, the detection of abnormalities and epidemiological studies will be analysed to evaluate current local and national practice. An evidence-informed, women-centred approach to practice will be promoted to improve the quality and experience of service provision in this area.

  • Audit & Standard setting
  • Principles & Practice of Health Promotion
  • Result Giving & Accountability
  • Cervical Screening in women with physical/learning disabilities
  • Colposcopy
  • Legal, Ethical & Professional issues
  • Post course review and audit of cervical screening in practice

Assessment

After undertaking a minimum of five cervical samples under the supervision of the Instructing Nurse in practice, the course participant must undertake a minimum of 20 cytologically adequate samples and maintain a record of each one.

On completion of the course, all documents and records are submitted for marking and moderation. Students must submit a skills inventory in practice and a guided learning pack, of no more than 1500 words.
