Understanding Cancer Treatment Modalities

Level 6

30 Credits

The module is open to healthcare professionals who work within in-patient or out-patient oncology. It is also useful to practice nurses and community nursing staff, who increasingly find themselves attending cancer patients.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that one in three people will suffer from cancer, and the incidence is increasing in an ageing population. You will examine cancer therapies and their effect on patient physiology and immunology, as well as quality of life, and the effect of cancer on fertility. The module explores a number of site specific tumours and evaluates the impact of treatment on patients and their families. You will also examine cancer treatment within the framework of ethical theories.

The approach taken for this module is holistic and comprehensive. Teaching is delivered via lecture, seminar and discussion and encourages the contribution made by experiential learning. In addition, you will be encouraged to manage your own learning.
