Working with Confused Communication using the V.E.R.A Framework
Workshop
V.E.R.A is a stepped approach to communication, initially designed by the presenters and co-authors to help practitioners know what to say when faced with disrupted communication. Focusing on issues faced when working with older people with dementia, the workshop explores how to connect with the person.
V.E.R.A. refers to Validation, Emotion, Reassurance and Action. Each concept is discussed and case examples demonstrate how they build towards meaningful engagement. V.E.R.A. has attracted significant attention since its publication in the Nursing Standard 2012, with practitioners reporting its usefulness as a practical guide for communication.
The authors are proud to be working with North Essex Partnership Foundation Trust in delivering these workshops.
