Prevention and Management of Infection

The prevention and control of infection is fundamental to the provision of a safe environment for patients and constitutes an essential part of the practice of any health care professional working in a clinical setting. It is therefore paramount that health care practitioners have sufficient knowledge and insight into the factors which contribute to the development of infection in patients in order to determine and evaluate the most effective strategies to safeguard their patients.
HealthCare Associated Infection are estimated to cost the nation is one billion pounds per annum (Plowman et al, 1999). New and re-emerging infectious diseases have been a major cause of illness and death in the past decade and have generated much public concern. The Department of Health (2003) have identified the need for increased education relating to the prevention and management of infection. This module aims to develop the skills and knowledge that nursing staff require to identify infection risks and to assist in practice to prevent and manage health care associated infection and communicable disease.
In order to reflect the shift in health care provision from the hospital to the community, this module explores the prevention and management of infection in both the acute and primary care settings.
Assessment is through a 3,000 word essay
