Course summary

The PHTLS course is an intensive two-day experience. It emphasises the need for a rapid assessment of the critical trauma patient; treatment of shock and hypoxaemia; and rapid transportation to an appropriate hospital.

Course objectives

The course aims to:
  • Provide a description of the physiology and kinematics of injury.
  • Provide an understanding of the need for rapid assessment of the trauma patient.
  • Advance the participant's level of knowledge in regard to examination and diagnostic skills.
  • Enhance the participant's performance in the assessment and treatment of the trauma patient.
  • Advance the participant's level of competence in regard to specific prehospital trauma intervention skills.
  • Provide an overview and establish a management method for the prehospital care of the multisystem trauma patient.



Target Audience/Suitability

HCD qualified technicians, HPC registered paramedics, registered nurses involved in pre-hospital care, registered medical practitioners.

Format

Lectures and interactive skills stations. Through an assessment-based approach, students gain deeper knowledge and are exposed to new skills.
