Leadership Practice in Health & Social Care
Level 6
30 Credits
Effective leadership is essential in providing high quality care. Staff morale and motivation, retention and recruitment, professional development, quality improvements, service efficiency and effectiveness all depend on the style and quality of leadership.
The module is designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of management and the necessary leadership skills to become a facilitator and motivator of change in the workplace.
Leadership and management concepts, models and theories will be examined in general and evaluated with specific respect to their application in healthcare delivery. This method of learning helps develop transferable lifelong learning skills.
The module will also develop the practitioner's ability to better assimilate the components of The NHS Plan under the umbrella of Clinical Governance into their practice.

Assessment
The student will be required to provide an assignment to support a claim for 30 credits at level 3. This will be in the form of an essay which will focus on organisational and leadership issues and an assessment of the effectiveness of leadership principles with recommendations for action to improve performance. The student will be entitled to a minimum of two hours support for the development of the assessment. It should be noted that there is an expectation the student will undertake a total of approximately 300 learning hours to complete this module; this will include tutorials, literature review, professional development and the development of the assignment and web based activities via our new virtual learning environment (VLE) for distance learning students.
