Immediate Life Support (ILS)

Workshop

Course summary

The ILS course has been developed in order to standardise much of the in-hospital training undertaken already by Resuscitation Officers. Its aim is to train healthcare personnel in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, simple airway management and safe defibrillation (manual and/or AED), enabling them to manage patients in cardiac arrest until arrival of a cardiac arrest team and to participate as members of that team.

The course is run over one day and consists of lectures and practical stations. The lectures cover:
  • Causes and prevention of cardiorespiratory arrest
  • The ALS algorithm
The practical stations are:
  • The ABCDE approach
  • Initial resuscitation and defibrillation
  • Airway (with optional LMA)
  • Targeted training
  • CASTeach
There is one CASTeach demonstration. Emphasis is placed on managing patients until the arrival of the cardiac arrest team and on participating as members of that team.

Assessment

Assessment on the course is continuous in nature.

The ILS course is recognised for continuing professional development.

Who should attend

The course is designed for healthcare professionals who may be part of a cardiac team, or others that may be required to participate in cardiac arrest situations.
