New textbook on business research emphasises the role of the dissertation supervisor

Press release issued: 17 May 2010

Dr Jonathan Wilson, a Senior Lecturer in the Ashcroft International Business School, has just published a new book, Essentials of Business Research: A Guide to Doing Your Research Project, with Sage Publications. The book is a valuable resource for any student in a business school doing a research methods course or doing a research project (dissertation). It is designed as a concise, student-friendly text that cuts through the jargon of research-methods terminology to present a clear guide to the basics of methodology in a business and management context.

Jonathan explains his motivation for writing the book:

"Many students have commented to me that they would like to see a more concise research-methods textbook. Ideally, something that contains essential cases and concepts, as opposed to a wide range of both business and student examples. In addition, students are often interested in the experiences of other students and the role of the dissertation supervisor. Therefore, this book aims to guide the student through the entire research process by using actual student case examples, and explaining the role of the supervisor and how to meet their expectations. In some institutions, the supervisor is also the first marker of the dissertation, so it is important for students to understand how to use their supervisor effectively as well as recognise the criteria they may use when marking the dissertation."

Essentials of Business Research: A Guide to Doing Your Research Project contains a number of key features within the text, these include:
  • 'You're the Supervisor' sections - which helps students to meet their learning outcomes
  • Common questions and answers - which provides students with an invaluable point of reference for some of the challenges they are likely to face while undertaking their research project
  • A comprehensive section on ethical issues that students need to consider when undertaking their research project
  • A full student glossary

The book is packed throughout with student-friendly features, such as helpful diagrams, student case studies, chapter objectives, annotated further reading sections and a summary and references at the end of each chapter. Finally, the text is accompanied by a companion website containing an array of material for lecturers and students, including multiple-choice questions to enable students to test their knowledge and progress.
