New Road Junction To Encourage Sustainable Travel In Chelmsford

Essex County Council is supporting Anglia Ruskin University's efforts to provide more sustainable transport opportunities through the construction of a new road junction.

The £1.6m junction, funded by the University, will provide better public transport access for thousands of students and staff by putting the university campus on new bus routes.

Anglia Ruskin University is committed to lowering its carbon footprint with a University Travel Plan encouraging sustainability through cycling, walking and using the bus.

Sandy Lynam, Director of Estates & Facilities Services at Anglia Ruskin University said:

"At Anglia Ruskin University we are committed to lowering our carbon footprint and this junction is a key part of that work. This junction will help us move towards having a lower impact on our environment and continuing our work to a more sustainable campus. Every effort has been made to design and construct the works with the minimum disruption to road users."

Recent research by Anglia Ruskin found that more than half of all students are either car sharing, walking, cycling, or taking the bus to the campus but that 45% are still driving in alone.
Councillor Norman Hume, Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said:

"This new junction is part of Anglia Ruskin University's ongoing effort to lower its carbon footprint. Anglia Ruskin University brings world class education to Essex's county town and we wholeheartedly support the University's efforts to bring better travel opportunities to thousands of students and staff. We will be supporting the University's efforts to keep inconvenience to a minimum during the construction period."

This new junction is intended to help reduce that car use further by providing better access for public transport with talks underway with bus companies over the provision of extra services and reductions in the amount of parking at the University.
