Anglia Ruskin Students' Union pick up Silver Sound Impact award and Silver Best Bar None award

Press release issued: 6 April 2010

NUSSL's annual awards dinner in Liverpool on March 31st proved fruitful for Anglia Ruskin Students' Union who picked up a Silver Sound Impact award and Silver Best Bar None award. Matthew East (President), Phil Mackay (General Manager) and Luke Delderfield (Venue Manager) were at the dinner to collect the awards.

The Best Bar None award is given for exceptional work in promoting safe alcohol retailing and student safety within the late night industry. The Silver award given to Anglia Ruskin Students' Union successfully wrapped up the rigorous five month assessment process. During this time all entrants are required to complete a workbook, which includes 96 measured criteria, and undertake a thorough on-site assessment from a Best Bar None representative.

Students' unions have always considered the welfare of their students and at a time when negative perceptions of the licensed trade prevails, particularly with regards to student drinking, the Best Bar None format is a positive leap in improving the standards, and indeed the perceptions, of alcohol retailing.

Students' unions are also leading the way in greening campuses and communities across the UK, according the latest findings of NUS's green scheme. The Sound Environmental Impact Awards seeks to capture the positive green innovations in students' unions and promote them to the general public.

Susan Nash, NUS's Vice President Society and Citizenship, said:

"This year a record 83 students' unions took part in our scheme, capturing an array of novel innovations, including capturing waste heat from dancing students as an alternative to patio heaters. With fifty-five unions reaching our Silver standard, we have demonstrated that we have collectively made a really positive impact on the environment."

Sound Impact is run by NUS, sponsored by The Co-operative and in partnership with The Ecologist. Both awards schemes aim to continually challenge unions' operating practices and as such, each year, NUS are seeing the overall standards of entries significantly improving. Gaining silver in both awards shows the excellent measures Anglia Ruskin Students' Union are taking to; provide a safer environment for students to socialise and make a positive impact in their environmental outputs.
