Seven award-winning student radio presenters from Cambridge student radio station CUR1350 joined the likes of radio greats John Peel, Chris Moyles and Simon Mayo as they hit the airwaves of BBC Radio 1 for a special two-hour takeover.

In recognition of CUR1350's prestigious Best Student Radio Station award at the SRA's (Student Radio Awards) in November 2007, the lucky seven found themselves warming up for Zane Lowe's breakfast show on Monday 24th March. The presenters broadcasted from the famous Yalding House studios on Great Portland Street with full BBC training prior to their show, which aired between 5am and 7am on Monday morning.

Michael Brooks, CUR1350 Station Manager between 2005 and 2007, has said that he was:

"thrilled that CUR1350 has been awarded the best student radio award at the National Student Radio Awards 2007.

I am very proud to have served as station manager during the period that the award was dependant on. The level of quality is evident through the fact that the BBC is letting us loose on one of their biggest national radio stations, BBC Radio 1, and we very much look forward to demonstrating to the rest of the UK what university students, staff and researchers from Cambridge University and Anglia Ruskin can listen to on CUR1350."

Martin Steers, the newly elected Station Manager, believes:

"it's good to see both students from Anglia Ruskin and Cambridge University going to Radio 1. Both Universities have students wishing to pursue a career in the media, and we actively recruit, support and encourage these students at CUR1350."

Kat Godfrey, the Best Female SRA winner and CUR1350 presenter, also hit the Radio 1 airwaves on Monday morning, between 3.30 and 5am.

CUR1350 won the Best Student Station award at a glitzy ceremony held in Central London last November, fighting off more than 300 other entries to win Gold for the first time in that station's 29 year history.

Having significantly contributed to the glassware sitting proudly in the CUR1350 studios, Michael Brooks, Martin Steers, Sandy Mill, Tim Lewis, Charles Lyons, Carrie Raynham, and Jaine Sykes all took to the mic, showcasing the breadth of talent which won the station the distinguished award for 2007. Whilst it was a tough choice for the former station manager, the takeover team were chosen based on their input to the station's achievement in 2006-07.

The early morning breakfast slot on Radio 1 is of special significance to student radio, with SRA Best Male 2006 Greg James taking the reigns since 2007. Following the award for Best Station, Greg was full of praise for CUR1350, adding:

"winning Best Station is the biggest award of the night and the opportunity it gives is incredible...it's a fantastic team award for a team contribution."

The accolade of appearing on BBC Radio 1 is the next big stepping stone for the award-winning team, many of whom hope to pursue top jobs in the industry.
