A team of cyclists from Anglia Ruskin will be pedalling for pounds in a few weeks time to raise money for Little Havens Children's Hospice.
On Sunday 26 June, cyclists taking part in the Essex Countryside Bike Ride, as sponsored by M&G Investments, will be wheeling across miles of picturesque countryside through Chelmsford, Danbury, Good Easter and Maldon in aid of Little Havens. The event, which starts and finishes at Anglia Ruskin's Chelmsford campus, is hoping to raise £30,000 to fund a specialist children's nurse for a year. One team registered to take part is the 'Ruskin Riders' - a team of university employees. Together they are hoping to raise as much money as possible for the charity which will cost £2.4 million to run this year.
Lloyd Williams, Building Officer, is tackling the 60 mile route option and said:
"I've taken part in the event before as I'm quite a keen cyclist and a bit of a bike geek! The routes are great because it makes you realise you don't have to go too far to see some of the countryside. I'm looking forward to taking part and helping to raise money for a good cause."
As well as the 60 mile route for more experienced riders, participants can enter the 25 mile route or the 10 mile route which is perfect for beginners or for families with younger children. The rest of the team, including Jackie Naish, Jade Ellis and Yvonne Parker are getting ready for the 25 mile challenge.
Yvonne commented:
"It's a really good team building exercise and we'll be celebrating crossing the finish line with a cheeky drink. We've asked our suppliers and contractors to sponsor us as a team and will be asking our friends and family to donate as well."
County Councillor Stephen Castle, Cabinet Member for Education and the 2012 Games said:
"We are making huge efforts to increase the take up of cycling around Essex to give our residents a better quality of life and improve our environment. Cycling is a great way to improve your health and fitness, and can be a great social activity. I would like to wish everyone taking part in the Essex Countryside Bike Ride the very best of luck."
Cyclists under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and wear a helmet. There will be refreshments, family entertainment including demonstrations from Radical Bikes, face painters, live bands and music throughout the day. Each participant will receive a medal, as well as top fundraising prizes. There is also free parking on site.
Entry fees vary depending on your chosen route. Adults over the age of 16 are charged £15.00 to take part in the 25 or 60 mile route; £14.00 per person for a team entry of more than six riders; children aged between 12 and 15 years old is priced at £7.00 and families (maximum 2 children and two adults) can enter for £15.00.
