Richard Madeley received an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Anglia Ruskin University on Wednesday, 12 October.

The ceremony, at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, saw Richard presented with his award by Anglia Ruskin's Vice Chancellor, Professor Michael Thorne, for his contribution to television, reading, entertainment and media.

At the start of his career Richard studied journalism at Harlow College, which now offers degrees in partnership with Anglia Ruskin, and after the ceremony Richard spoke of how honoured he was to receive his award alongside 255 Anglia Ruskin students.

Richard said:

"The ceremony was such an uplifting experience and I felt quite emotional at times. It is such an important day for so many people and I'm proud to have been part of it - it's great to be in the company of so many deserving people.

"I learnt a great deal at Harlow College in a very short space of time and absolutely loved it there. I look forward to seeing the new Harlow College building in the very near future."

Sandra Hollis, Pro Vice Chancellor said:

"We are delighted to honour Richard for his outstanding career as a journalist and TV presenter, and also for the wonderful work he now does to encourage people to enjoy literature through the Richard and Judy Book Club.

"We are particularly delighted that Richard accepted the award because he is a former Harlow College student and we now offer a degree in journalism in partnership with Harlow College."

During this week's graduation ceremonies in Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin are also presenting honorary degrees to leading jockey Frankie Dettori, businessman and Deputy Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympics Sir Keith Mills, Abcam Chief Executive Dr Jonathan Milner, Ford of Britain Chairman Joe Greenwell, illustrator John Holder, composer Mark-Anthony Turnage, writer Kevin Crossley-Holland and conductor Sadaharu Muramatsu.
