Local investment in publishing talent gives hope to aspiring publishers
Press release issued: 21 July 2009
Businesses encourage postgraduates to pursue a career in publishing through bursary provision
A local publishing services company is looking ahead through the financial doom and gloom - and investing in the future of aspiring publishers. Hart McLeod Ltd is another company involved in publishing that has taken an interest in Anglia Ruskin University's new MA in Publishing, offering its support by way of a bursary for students."Like any successful company, Hart McLeod recognises the value of forward thinking and investment in the future. Modern publishing is a fast-paced and quick-changing profession and publishers need to be able to keep pace with developments while also having a solid grounding in all the traditional skills areas of publishing. The course at Anglia Ruskin University teaches all these skills and we wanted to ensure that the right candidate would be able to benefit."
The MA in Publishing has been developed in close consultation with the industry in order to meet its changing needs. The Advisory Board is made up of, amongst others, representatives from Cambridge University Press, Macmillan, Polity Press, Salt, and ProQuest to ensure that the MA is always current, attractive to potential employers, and provides 'real' work as the course progresses.
"We wanted to make sure that our course would really place our graduates ahead of the game. The contribution of our Advisory Board has been invaluable in giving us insight in to the real demands of the industry. As well as equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to meet these demands our contacts within the industry mean we are able help set up work placements, offering our students the opportunity to also gain experience which is often the hardest to come by."
In the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2008, more than 30% of Anglia Ruskin's submissions were rated as Internationally Excellent or World-Leading. Among the academic disciplines now rated World-Leading are Allied Health Professions & Studies; Art & Design; English Language & Literature; Geography & Environmental Studies; History; Music; Psychology; and Social Work & Social Policy & Administration.
The University jumped 35 places in the Times Higher Education tables following the announcement of the outcome of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) results.
