Student feels benefit of publishing scholarship
Press release issued: 2 October 2009
"I'm delighted to have been chosen by Hart McLeod as the company's scholar for this, the first year of Anglia's MA in Publishing. The bursary provides me with much needed support (financial and emotional) and I feel both fortunate and honoured in accepting it. The course itself promises real insight in to the publishing profession and it is its links with Hart McLeod and the local industry that can make this happen. I, for one, am very much looking forward to getting started and to seeing what the future will bring."
"It wasn't a hard decision for Hart McLeod to offer financial support to a student. Several of our staff have children in higher education and we know just how difficult it can be to simply make ends meet. Furthermore we believe that publishing deserves (maybe demands) the recruitment of dedicated individuals who have had time to not only learn more about the profession, but who can ignite new initiatives and ideas.
"Publishing is changing fast. Although announcing the death of the book is probably premature, publishing today is so much more than simply print. Online media, download applications, e-readers, they all play a part. There needs to be a place where students can look at every aspect of the profession. Anglia Ruskin University's new MA course is likely to become that place."
The MA in Publishing has been developed in close consultation with the industry in order to meet its changing needs. The Advisory Board is made up of, amongst others, representatives from Cambridge University Press, Macmillan, Polity Press, Salt, and ProQuest to ensure that the MA is always current, attractive to potential employers, and provides 'real' work as the course progresses.
"We wanted to make sure that our course would really place our graduates ahead of the game. The contribution of our Advisory Board has been invaluable in giving us insight in to the real demands of the industry. As well as equipping our students with the skills and knowledge to meet these demands our contacts within the industry mean we are able help set up work placements, offering our students the opportunity to also gain experience which is often the hardest to come by."
