The Olympic Torch will set off from Anglia Ruskin University in Chelmsford on Saturday, 7 July as part of the nationwide 2012 Olympic Torch Relay.

Starting from Anglia Ruskin's campus at 6.57am, the Olympic Torch will pass the iconic Marconi Factory on New Street, Chelmsford Cathedral, the High Street, Moulsham Street and Chelmsford Museum in Oaklands Park.

Spectators will be able to gather along the length of the route to watch the event up close and cheer on the torchbearers.

Anglia Ruskin's Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Lesley Dobree, said:

"It's very exciting that the Olympic Torch is visiting the city of Chelmsford and it's a great honour that Anglia Ruskin has been selected as the start point for the Torch Relay on 7 July.

"The Olympic Torch visits Chelmsford less than 3 weeks before the Opening Ceremony so there's bound to be a huge amount of interest and we're looking forward to welcoming everyone onto campus to join in the fun."

Chelmsford Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Ray Ride said:

"I have no doubt that seeing the Olympic Torch pass through the streets of Chelmsford will bring a huge amount of satisfaction and joy to all those people who wake up early to witness this historic moment.

I am very proud of bringing the torch to Chelmsford so that so many people have the chance to be part of an event which is certainly not going to be repeated for a very long time."

Local residents Ken Edwards, Moesha Howard, Sacha Sewell and Sylvia Sargeant will all carry the Olympic Torch for a section of the relay. After leaving Chelmsford, the Torch will make its way across Essex and Hertfordshire before reaching Cambridge for an overnight stop.

The Torch will cover approximately 8,000 miles during its journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford on 27 July. You can view details of the streets along which the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will be run, at www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay
