Vibrant stamp design will help to promote the Paralympic Games

Anglia Ruskin University graduate David Doyle has been selected by the Royal Mail to design a stamp as part of its series to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games. David, who completed his MA in Children's Book Illustration in 2007, was handpicked from amongst a wide range of artists on the books of illustration agency The Artworks to design a stamp for the Paralympics.

Honoured at being chosen for this prestigious assignment, former Cambridge School of Art student David explains:

"Royal Mail approached the agency and commissioned specific artists to design stamps to represent particular games. I was really chuffed to be picked for this highly prestigious commission which I hope will open doors for me. It is great to be associated with artists such as Julian Opie who have also designed for the series."

The team at Royal Mail responsible for commissioning the artists were drawn to David's graphic style and expressive use of lines. David was chosen to design for one of the less well known Paralympic sports 'Boccia', a game similar to boules where competitors using wheelchairs aim for a jack by throwing balls in the air.
David was keen therefore to maintain spontaneity in the design:

"It was tricky to remain confident and not to tighten up and become too conservative. But I just had to remind myself that the Royal Mail team had selected me for my approach to design in the first place. It took a few attempts but I am very pleased with the final result."

It is perhaps this openness to new ideas and flexibility which is helping to contribute to David's success; as well a permanent position as a Graphic Designer with an engineering company David is a regular illustrator for the Times Educational Supplement.
David's characteristic technique was one he was able to hone whilst studying at Anglia Ruskin University's Cambridge School of Art:

"The MA Children's Book Illustration helped me to develop and clarify my own individual style of illustration whilst also introducing me to other way of working. My style is still developing."

Royal Mail will be producing series of stamps to celebrate the 2012 Olympic Games up until 2012.
