Ceremony marks CB1 buildings being formally handed over to Anglia Ruskin

Three new student accommodation buildings for Anglia Ruskin University were officially completed yesterday [27 June] at CB1 in Cambridge. The handover of the buildings was celebrated with a tree planting ceremony at the site with Anglia Ruskin, CB1 developers Brookgate and construction company Wates Construction.

The buildings, which provide 511 en-suite bedrooms in 112 studios and 399 apartments, are now ready for occupation, with the first students moving in on 15 September 2012. Designed by architects TP Bennett, they form part of the wider CB1 masterplan being delivered around Cambridge Station.

As a result of the agreement with Anglia Ruskin and the recently announced deal with Downing, a total of £4.25m will be released to Greater Anglia for the redevelopment of Cambridge Station.

Speaking at the event, Sandy Lynam, Director of Estates and Facilities Services at Anglia Ruskin, said:

"We are delighted that our students will be living in the CB1 accommodation from September 2012. Providing modern studios and apartments for our student population is vital to our continued success as a university and this location, close to both the station and the leisure park will provide an excellent place for our students to live."

Sven Topel, Chief Executive of Brookgate, said:

"Our vision has always been for a mix of uses across CB1 to deliver a vibrant and active environment around the station. Welcoming students into the area will bring CB1 to life and enable Cambridge to maintain its position as a fantastic place for young people to study. We have been delighted to work alongside Anglia Ruskin and Wates on this element of CB1 to deliver these new student blocks on time and on budget."

The buildings have been constructed to achieve a BREEAM 'excellent' rating for sustainability and include heat and power generation systems and photovoltaic panels.

Substantial cycle parking has also been provided, using the latest two tier cycle parking equipment, similar to the ones currently on trial at the Station.

The project is owned by LaSalle Investment Management and is being let and managed by Corporate Residential Management.

The CB1 masterplan will provide 800,000 sq ft of commercial uses, 800,000 sq ft of residential apartments, student rooms and other uses including retail, restaurants and bars. The project also provides a refurbished station concourse, a new public square and a new transport interchange.
