Anglia Ruskin University has commissioned Entec to design and manage the environmental remediation of a historic mill pond situated on its Chelmsford campus.

Working closely with the Environment Agency, Entec is developing proposals which look to de-silt the pond, remediate the contaminated pond deposits, improve the pond's ecological value and create a new landscape resource for the community. Pathways, planting and seating will be included on the bank side with decked lookout points. Bank side re-profiling will accompany the remodelling of the pond creating a two stage channel with a variety of profiles to maximise habitat opportunities.

Great Crested Newts and White Clawed Crayfish will be surveyed prior to works commencing and considerations are also being given to reptiles, bats, fish and nesting birds.

This complex project will be managed by Entec's landscape design team and will involve contaminated land, ecology, hydrology and civil engineering specialists. The project aims to be completed by autumn of 2008.
Entec's project manager Anthony Brookfield said:

"We are delighted to be involved on this landscape-led project which looks to integrate all the complex environmental factors evident at the mill pond to recreate a valuable ecological and amenity resource for the benefit of the university and the public alike."
