East Cambridgeshire District Council has recently played host to a marketing student from Anglia Ruskin University, as just one of a growing number of local organisations that has been supporting the Employer Mentoring Scheme run by the University in Cambridge.

All three parties have been taking part in the 2006-2007 programme of employer mentoring which is soon to conclude with a special awards presentation event.
Katie Morris, who runs the scheme says:

"More students are facing tougher competition for jobs. The Mentoring Scheme enables some of our best students to offer their skills to employers in return for business awareness and hands on experience of the workplace."

East Cambridgeshire District Council has been delighted with Julia Barts, the second year marketing student.
Says Suzanne Goff, who works in the Corporate Strategy Team:

"The Team regularly organises events and communicates with the public. Having Julia's skills and knowledge have really helped us to evaluate how we are doing."

For Julia, the experience has been rewarding and different:

"The challenge has been working across different departments with different people. I have used my marketing skills to design publicity for a sports event, advise on how to increase participation and assisting in the development of communication strategies."

Katie has been delighted with the outcome of the match:

"Over 98% of the matches are very successful, with both the employer and student getting more out of the scheme than they may have anticipated."

Employers nationally identify the lack of business awareness among graduates as being a significant barrier to progress. Addressing this criticism six years' ago, Anglia Ruskin University developed its Employer Mentoring Scheme, a targeted programme giving second year students an opportunity to be supported and mentored by a graduate or professional from local organisations on a one-to-one basis.

Mentoring organisations are drawn from across a variety of fields including Legal, Financial, Housing, IT, Built Environment, HR and Marketing, as well as Local Government.
