Learning and cultural 'hub' goes live

Anglia Ruskin University's new Learning Zone facility is to become the hub of learning and research for businesses, communities and students from the East of England. The latest phase in the £3.2m development provides over 50 additional networked computers, wireless working and purpose designed group learning facilities.

The development centralises the previously dispersed facilities provided on campus to enhance the learning experience of students attending the University. It also addresses the need to extend out the facilities on offer to businesses and members of the local community.

The Learning Zone, located at the University Library at East Road in Cambridge, has benefited from £1.5m funding from the East of England Development Agency (EEDA). It was commended for its 'potential for enhancing individual professional development and small business growth' by Sheila Childerhouse, Board Member for EEDA. Her comments were made during a ceremony which saw her unveil a commemorative plaque to signify that the facility was now officially open to all.
Speaking on the day, she said:

"This is an exceptional one-stop-shop for information for all potential users whether they are students or visitors to the campus. It is particularly relevant to small and medium sized businesses which could benefit from the use of high quality support services to help them achieve success.

"As more businesses are being encouraged to seek assistance from public, private and voluntary agencies, we are delighted to be involved with the opening of this new up to the minute resource in the centre of Cambridge."

Anglia Ruskin University's Pro Vice Chancellor for Corporate Development Peter Creamer added:

"This opening is part of a wider improvement plan which also includes the refurbishment of the Mumford Theatre and Ruskin Gallery. By going live with the Learning Zone facility we are improving the Open Access facilities on campus to encourage students, visitors and members of the wider local and business communities to spend more time with us adding value to their study, work or leisure proposition."

The Learning Zone will provide students and visitors with access to the University's digital library with its thousands of on-line journals, databases and other resources. Specialist equipment will also be available to Learning Zone users including interactive white boards and plasma screen audio visual facilities.
Continued Chris Davies, from Anglia Ruskin University's Department of Research and Development Services:

"This is an important adjunct to the existing library resource which will act as a learning facility and venue for business and community activities. The Ashcroft International Business School will be delivering learning, training and development courses from the Learning Zone as we work together with local businesses and communities to strengthen and improve the range of programmes and services provided to meet local needs."
