Leading jockey Frankie Dettori MBE received an honorary degree from Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge on Thursday 13 October.

Frankie, who lives just outside Cambridge, was awarded with a Doctor of Science degree for his achievements within the horse racing industry at a ceremony alongside hundreds of students at the Corn Exchange. Mark-Anthony Turnage received an honorary Doctor of Music award during the same graduation ceremony for his achievements as a composer.

The link between Anglia Ruskin and Frankie comes at a time of unique investment in equine research facilities at the university. A new Equine Therapy Centre in Cambridge allows Equine Studies degree students to learn more about horses, while horses can receive state-of-the-art therapeutic treatments to maintain their overall fitness.

Speaking after the ceremony, the jockey said:

"I'm really proud to receive an honorary doctorate and I can't wait to show the pictures to my children. My wife, Catherine, was here and she's very proud.

"My father-in-law is a professor and it is now ironic that he has to call me Dr Dettori."

During this week's graduation ceremonies in Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin has also presented honorary degrees to broadcaster Richard Madeley, businessman and Deputy Chairman of the London Organising Committee for the Olympics Sir Keith Mills, Abcam Chief Executive Dr Jonathan Milner, Ford of Britain Chairman Joe Greenwell, illustrator John Holder, writer Kevin Crossley-Holland and conductor Sadaharu Muramatsu.
