This day-long event at BAFTA (Piccadilly, London) for the London Games Fringe Festival is entitled 'The C Word: Convergence Games and Film' and hopes to illuminate new crossover practices in the production processes involved in games, film, and TV. The event is co-produced by FDMX, Pixel-Lab, and 01zero-one as part of Skills Week.

The concept of convergence is not new, but it's rare that practitioners from film and games are able to meet up and swap notes. In a series of seminars and demos, a diverse range of major players from these industries including Geomerics, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, Natural Motion and Evolution Studios (MotorStorm), Double Negative (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter & The Half Blood Prince) and Framestore (Casino Royale, Mission Impossible II) will be present to discuss the state of the art in rendering and realism, software, animation and lighting.

FDMX Co-ordinator Saint John Walker said

"Convergence has often been talked about, but it's rare to get so many knowledgeable speakers from the worlds of Games, Film, CGI and Visual Effects together in one place to engage in a really sustained and focused way. Everyone will learn something, and FDMX is pleased to be able to both devise and nurture events like this."

Saint wrote the structure for the day and recruited a number of high profile speakers, and will be chairing several panels at BAFTA.
David Hayward of Pixel-Lab said

"The games industry has historically been quite insular, though it becomes less so each year. At a time when it's under immense economic pressure, and given that so many skills are shared between the games industry and other disciplines such as animation, VFX and post-production, it's really important that developers get together with their peers to share knowledge and discuss the kind of issues they face."

Tricia Tuttle, Events Producer at BAFTA commented

"BAFTA has a remit to deliver a UK-wide programme of quality events for the film, TV and games industries, and also a range of events which connect established and emerging professionals. We're therefore delighted to be hosting this day of events co-produced by FDMX, Pixel Lab and 01zero-one which not only brings the industries together to share knowledge, but also allows established pros to share their experience with new practitioners."

Skills Week is a week-long series of events designed to raise the skills of game developers and graduates, and will conclude on Friday 31 October with 'The C Word'. The day will consist of discussion panels chaired by Pixel-Lab and FDMX, as well as taking questions from the floor. The day will also include a networking lunch.
