Graduates make big waves in fashion world
Press release issued: 23 June 2010
End of year fashion show now set to become annual event for Cambridge
Fashion designers from the first graduating year of Cambridge School of Art BA (Hons) Fashion Design have burst on to the fashion scene with a spectacular Fashion Show to mark their graduation.Senior Lecturer and BA (hons) Fashion Design course leader Wendy Moody recognises the importance of a graduation show as the time of year when the industry sits up and pays attentions with designers and the media on the look out for the latest talent and is proud of the student's achievements.
"The first graduate fashion/costume show here at ARU was a great success - the students worked incredibly hard with some outstanding outputs. The graduates are going from strength to strength and two of our students (Kayleigh and Joy) are already gaining recognition by the industry. I really look forward to seeing how Joy continues to push the boundaries with her innovative use of latex; and Kayleigh with her high end fashion collections."
Kayleigh Valentine describes it as being 'mad' since the Fashion Show. Her work was shown at the prestigious Brighton Fashion Week and featured on the homepage of the website which led to Kayleigh being interviewed by Vogue.com. She is now undertaking an internship with Supremebeing, working with Moldfashion.com to advise them on buying and styling and selling her work through them all whilst working on her next collection.
"My collection Lace on Leather feeds on from my previous collection designed. Its very personal as it was influenced by my great grandmother's personality and life. The inspiration stems from a collision of innocent vintage and rebellious rock styles. My signature style is my use of personal hand made fabrics. I use a form of layering and soldering to create beautiful interesting original fabrics. I think that the course at Anglia Ruskin has definitely helped me in form my own personal style. Students here can grow into the designer they want to be rather than sticking to the structure that other universities sometimes set."
Showing alongside Kayleigh at both the Cambridge and Brighton Fashion Shows was Joy Williams whose experimentation with latex has led to an opportunity to work with up-and- coming art-based photography company Fetish Rocks. Through connections on the BA (hons) Fashion Design Joy has landed an internship with couture latex company House of Harlot.
