Donation of £100,000 to support students
Press release issued: 2 January 2013
Anglia Ruskin receives generous cheque from Central Essex Community Services
Anglia Ruskin University has received a cheque for £100,000 to support students at its Chelmsford campus. The money has been donated by Central Essex Community Services (CECS) - a social enterprise providing NHS services to over 370,000 people living in mid Essex.CECS's 1,100-strong workforce of district nurses, health visitors, school nurses, therapy staff and public health professionals deliver care right across the Chelmsford, Braintree, Maldon and Halstead districts from three community hospitals and 12 community clinics, as well as in people's homes.
As a not-for-profit community interest company, CECS is committed to reinvesting any surpluses it makes into the community, staff and service developments.
"We are particularly pleased as a community interest company, situated in the centre of Essex, to be able to make this donation to Anglia Ruskin University.
"It has been a long-held passion of mine that we support people in our area to study who will then potentially go on to work for us - with the added benefit of supporting our communities and our services at the same time."
"Like many of our health service partners, CECS has a long-standing relationship with Anglia Ruskin University - as many of our trained nurses and clinicians graduate, they carry on with their professional development within the university. This donation cements our relationship with Anglia Ruskin and underlines our commitment to the voluntary sectors within mid Essex."
The £100,000 donation is to be split between the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education and the Lord Ashcroft International Business School, and will enable Anglia Ruskin to:
- Provide 50% bursaries to up to 20 students working in local charities, social enterprises, and voluntary organisations who wish to apply for a place on Anglia Ruskin's Cert HE course in Charity and Social Enterprise Management. This will be particularly valuable over the next two years, as third sector organisations face a period of financial uncertainty and reduced income, meaning that training is more relevant than ever
- Offer maintenance awards to two students a year from lower-income backgrounds in order to continue their studies in health and social care
- Introduce the CECS award for the outstanding student in the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education
- Provide an opportunity for two students to spend a year on paid placement with CECS subsequent to graduating from FHSCE
"Thanks to this generous donation, we will be able to offer maintenance awards for students from deprived backgrounds to enable them to continue their studies in health and social care at Anglia Ruskin. By alleviating their financial worries, these students can look forward to successfully completing their course and embarking on a career in the health sector."
"Being able to use the funding from CECS to support students on our Charity and Social Enterprise Management degree course is fantastic, and a real example of co-operative values in action.
As a newly formed social enterprise, CECS has led the way in innovative health and social care delivery in Essex, Cambridgeshire and London. We are confident that this donation will open the door to further collaboration and joint working with CECS in the future, as we continue to offer high quality work-related academic courses to students from all backgrounds."
