A new video games competition, "NEXT Next-gen", has been launched to challenge students in the East of England to come up with new and innovative images of what future games might look like.

NEXT Next-gen is a joint venture between FDMX (Film and Digital Media Exchange) and creative network Enter_ . The competition is designed to promote talent from the wide range of games, animation and multimedia courses in the East of England, and to raise the profile of games as a reputable career.

The winners will see their work judged by top games professionals as part of Enter_Unknown Territories, an international conference and festival for new technology arts in Cambridge in April 2007, at which the results will be announced. They will also receive a next-generation game console of their choice, with a bundle of games. The best entries will be showcased at the new Ruskin Gallery at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge in April and May 2007.

Sketches and illustrations on paper are just as welcome as digital images or animations.
said Saint John Walker, FDMX Co-ordinator at Anglia Ruskin University:

"With Next-generation games consoles allowing far superior gameplay and imagery, we thought the time was right to see what the next generation of creative artists can come up with. This competition asks students and games artists to look way over the horizon and imagine what games will look like by the time we get to Playstation 4 or 5!"
