An Anglia Ruskin University student is putting her business skills into practice by running her own comedy night on the Chelmsford campus on Thursday, 3 May (7.30pm).
Headlining the evening in the Students' Union will be stand-up star Tiffany Stevenson, who in addition to appearing on TV in Show Me The Funny, The Office and Footballers Wives, is an Edinburgh Fringe regular.
Second year BSc Accounting and Finance student Nicola O'Riordan came up with the idea while studying an Enterprise and Entrepreneurial Management module.
Nicola said:
"There was a competition in the module to come up with a plan for a new business, and the combination of my love of comedy and the distinct lack of comedy nights in Chelmsford led to this. It was only a theoretical competition, though, and as far as I know I'm the only student who turned their proposal into reality.
"I didn't really know how to begin organising something like this so I put a shout out to my mates on Facebook and they suggested a promoter, Steve Watson, who runs the Laughing Pod comedy nights in Southend.
"Stephen helped me a great deal with the first night I ran in February and came along to make sure everything went smoothly, but this time I'm on my own! The entire line-up has been picked by me - if I haven't had chance to see them in person then I've watched clips on the internet to make sure they're what I'm after."
In addition to Tiffany Stevenson, support will come from Garrie Grubb, JoJo Georgiou, Matthew Griffen, Catherine Povinelli and Katie Field. The MC for the night is Luke Capasso, a US comedian who moved to the UK in 2010.
The event will take place in the SU bar in the Tindal building and is open to both students and the general public. Tickets cost £5 and are available from the SU bar and online at www.thelaughingpod.com
