Clarissa Campbell Orr offered Yale visiting fellowship

Clarissa Campbell Orr, Reader in Enlightenment, Gender and Court Studies at Anglia Ruskin University, will be heading to Yale University in the autumn to take up a visiting fellowship.

The position of Andrew W. Mellon Senior Visiting Scholar, offered by the Yale Centre for British Art, is part of a new three-year programme funded by the Andrew W. Mellon endowment at Yale.

Clarissa said:

"I'm very honoured to have been asked to go. The offer was completely unexpected and I'm extremely appreciative of the opportunity."

Clarissa's 2-month stay in the United States will coincide with the opening of an exhibition at the Yale Centre for British Art entitled 'Johan Zoffany RA: Society Observed', before it crosses the Atlantic to go on show at the Royal Academy in London in February next year.

Clarissa added:

"I have contributed an essay to the accompanying book as well as catalogue entries on some of the pictures, and I will be contributing to a seminar during the opening week of the exhibition.

I have previously been involved in an exhibition at Yale in 2009, which was on Mary Delany and her contemporaries."

Mary Delany (1700-1788) was a botanical artist and royal courtier during the reigns of King George II, and of King George III and Queen Charlotte. Clarissa wrote the lead essay for the accompanying book to the 2009 exhibition and while at Yale will be working on a biography of Mary Delaney which will be published by Yale University Press in 2014.
