Time running out for Cambridge students and businesses to Step forward
Press release issued: 3 June 2008
Time is running out for students and businesses in Cambridge to take advantage of this year's Shell Step summer placement programme, which creates bespoke work experience packages for students and small businesses.
With not long to go until the 20 June deadline, places are going fast and Shell is urging students and businesses to step forward now to avoid missing out.
Last year 661 students and businesses took part in the scheme nationwide, including 25 from Cambridge. Placements are individually tailored to the businesses' needs and students' skills and career ambitions to bring tangible benefits to both parties. In 2007, 97% of students felt the scheme improved their employability, while one in four businesses received a boost to their bottom line of at least £15,000.

James Smith, Chairman of Shell UK, said:
"Shell Step offers students hands-on work experience that textbooks can't provide, while businesses enjoy an injection of enthusiasm and new skills that can add substantial value to their bottom line. I'd urge businesses in Cambridge to consider how the scheme could benefit them."
Rodger Broad, a Regional Director at the IOD and one of the judges at the Shell Step awards in 2007 said:
"Shell Step offers businesses the opportunity to benefit from some of the most lively and innovative young minds around. Last year, students devised projects that not only helped their own development but also opened the eyes of their corporate host to previously unseen issues and solutions."
In 2007, students completed a diverse range of projects for their host companies, including marketing, research, IT, product development and management consultancy, with two thirds of placements adding at least £5,000 worth of value to the business.
