Anglia Ruskin University and Harlow College will perform a 'ground-breaking ceremony' on 17 September 2010 to signal the start of work on the £9m University Centre Harlow.
The project combines grants from The East of England Development Agency (EEDA), Harlow-Stansted Growth Area Partnership led by Harlow Council and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) contributing a total of £9.3 million for the new three-storey, 2400 square metre higher education facility to be built on Harlow College's Velizy Avenue campus.
Professor Michael Thorne, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University said:
"We are extremely pleased to be collaborating with Harlow College on this project. It provides an excellent example of how further education and higher education can work together to provide seamless education. This centre will be of significant benefit, it will provide a new focus for education in Harlow encouraging innovation and aspiration. The centre will benefit local people and, of course, the local economy."
Colin Hindmarch, Principal of Harlow College agreed, he said:
"I know that the town recognises that this will be a wonderful opportunity for its community, I am particularly delighted that Robert Halfon MP will be 'cutting the turf'. I am sure that the ground breaking event will be an important milestone for the future of education in Harlow... if only I could be as certain about the weather!"
University Centre Harlow is part of the HEFCE's programme to raise the skill levels and increase participation by people with little or no experience of higher education, and is one of a range of initiatives to address these priorities. Its distinctiveness lies in making higher education available in areas not already well served with relevant higher education.
