VERU researcher wins Asian Women of Achievement Award

Dr Zahra Jessa, a post doctoral Research Fellow in the Vision and Eye Research Unit, is celebrating after being named "Professional of the Year" at the Asian Women of Achievement Awards 2010.

The award was presented on the 19th May at a glittering ceremony in London's Park Lane. Zahra follows in the footsteps of her colleague and director of the Vision and Eye Research Unit, Professor Shahina Pardhan, who received the award in 2001. The award recognises professionals who have become leading practitioners in their chosen field, setting an example to other women and having their contributions recognised by their peers.

Zahra's achievements have been in improving the detection of correctable vision loss in the older population, which involved the development of vision screening tools for use in the community in order to identify early visual problems. Within VERU, Zahra is working with Professor Rupert Bourne on a funded project at Hinchingbrooke and Papworth hospitals to investigate how pressure in the eye varies in a 24 hour period, in order to try to indentify adults vulnerable to glaucoma, the world's leading cause of irreversible blindness. Zahra also practises at Moorfields Eye Hospital.
