Dr Andrew Kolarik
Research Fellow
Profile:My research interests lie with both vision and hearing research. I have a PhD in hearing perception from Cardiff University, and approximately one and a half years of post-doctoral vision research working with older adults, also in Cardiff. My PhD investigated the psychology of hearing, which involved measuring and modelling binaural temporal windows and auditory filters. The findings have been published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, and in the journal Hearing Research.
Following my PhD, I conducted postdoctoral research in the field of vision science. This study investigated eye movements in the ageing population, measuring accuracy (as defined using standard gain measures) and precision (assessed by partitioning the motion variability using a procedure resembling partitioning the sums-of-squares in ANOVA). The findings have been published in the Journal of Experimental Brain Research.
I am currently working on a project investigating hearing in the visually impaired at Anglia Ruskin University at the Vision and Eye Research Unit. The study investigates distance perception of sound sources in an indoor environment, and the use of acoustic tagging to aid navigation of indoor environments.
Research interests:
My principal research interests lie in the field of perception. My previous work addressed binaural hearing, specifically temporal and spectral resolution, and I have investigated the duration of the auditory temporal window and the width of the auditory filter. I have also conducted research in the field of vision, investigating eye movements in both young and elderly observers.
My current work investigates how low vision participants are able to make use of sound cues to map and navigate through the environment. I am currently investigating the use of acoustic cues such as level and reverberation to improve spatial awareness among those with low vision, and to develop strategies to aid visually impaired patients in using auditory cues to localize objects and perceive distance. I am also interested in how low vision listeners navigate using sound, and use echoes to detect obstacles and walls in their environment.
