I Know You Are Normal

Date: 1-31 October 2010
Venue:
Arts Picturehouse, Cambridge

A new series of photographs by the Supanee Gazeley Fine Art Prize-winning student Marina Velez.

In this exhibition Marina explores the concept of 'normality' in digital image making, by experimenting with photographing photographs by placing, superimposing, taping and lighting previously taken photographs and choreographing them together in a new unlikely composition. It is her hope that the strange places the characters inhabit reflect a psychological state of mind that finds its place beyond the aesthetic language.

When working with digital technology one is faced with elements such as file format, pixels per square inch, compression, to mention a few. From the camera to the computer to the printer, the digital image suffers a metamorphosis in each step of the materialization process. Digital technology is geared towards enhancing the final image product by, for instance, suggesting that a low-resolution image should not be enlarged. Another example of this is the view that the standard 6x4 inch print is regarded as 'normal' by the holiday snap industry.

The Arts Picturehouse provides the perfect venue to show this new exciting body of work.

Marina has just finished her BA Fine Art course at Cambridge School of Art, in which she achieved a 1st Class Honours award, and is now enrolled on the Master of Fine Art.
