Beautiful and Sublime
An exhibition by Amelia Poon
Date: 25 October - 19 November
Venue: The Sweet Shop, Sussex Street, Cambridge
This exhibition comprises two of Amelia's recent installations:
Mobiles
These three sculptures are created out of recycled newspapers, meticulously rolled up one by one and put together with the idea of Optical Art in mind. All three have been shortlisted by a number of prestigious shows and competitions namely The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2010, The London International Creative Competition, 2010 and The Threadneedle Prize, London 2010.
Cuboids, MMIX - MMX
This installation is constructed with handmade brick-like unit components made of the Financial Times and Chinese newspapers. Symbolically, it encapsulates the day-to-day international issues (occasionally titled on the brick itself) be it political or economical, past or present events. The background slits behind the brick wall structure signifies the cultural, religious etc differences that inevitably sublimes suffering and various emotional confusion. Such artistic revelation embeds the artist's underlying wish of eventual settlements leading to amicable world peace.
Amelia has just completed her BA (Hons) Fine Art at the Cambridge School of Art, Anglia Ruskin University and has now started on our Master of Fine Art course.
This exhibition is part of the Changing Spaces project set up by Cambridge City Council and Love Cambridge, which has negotiated the use of vacant shop fronts around the city for exhibition purposes.
