Show and Tell: The Picturebook Makers

Date: 20 April - 7 May
Private View: Thursday 21 April, 17.00

Celebrating ten years of Cambridge School of Art's acclaimed MA Children's Book Illustration programme, this exhibition featured original artwork and preparatory sketchbooks by some of the best-known artists in the field, including Axel Scheffler, Alexis Deacon, David Hughes, Kazuno Kohara and John Lawrence. As well as these leading names in British publishing, the exhibition introduced artwork by artists from further afield whose books had not yet been seen in English. These included Fabian Negrin, winner of the 2011 Bologna Ragazzi Award for non-fiction illustration, and leading South Korean artist Sunkyung Cho. Also on show were a number of graduates of the MA course, who are continuing to make names for themselves in the publishing industry.

Interest in the picturebook as an art form has grown rapidly in recent years and Cambridge School of Art has been at the forefront of research and practice in the field. Many of the artists represented in the exhibition also contributed to the teaching and research in Anglia Ruskin's Centre for Children's Book Studies. Alongside the exhibition there were events and book signings with a number of the artists and also a link-up with Heffers Children's Bookshop in Trinity Street. This was an exhibition for all the family.
