meta- (part II)

Date: 6th - 26th March
Time: 9am-9pm Monday to Friday, 10am-5pm Saturday

"meta-" explores one particular area of fine art practice - abstract painting - which, whilst having been a pivotal crux of modernism, has now found itself often bypassed with the prevalence of a conceptual mainstream which has dominated the art scene over the last twenty years or more.

The exhibition has taken place in two parts. The first, opened by renowned art critic Matthew Collings, saw Professor Bruce Russell select a group of longstanding practitioners who have each developed a unique take on the language of painted abstraction. In this, part two, David Ryan has sought to develop a visual dialogue and exchange by bringing together a group of artists who are each concerned with surface, colour and 'figured' events.

Never simply about making pictures, abstraction itself becomes a site of philosophical investigation as much as a materialist one; hence its longevity as a practice and this long overdue reappraisal, part of a bigger re-visiting of abstract painting.
