Everyday
Date: 13 October - 3 November 2011
Private View: Thursday 13 October, 17.00
The everyday brings out associations with the domestic where the ordinary is more commonly encountered as beautiful rather than the sublime. Low tech materials are often used as a means to access areas of aesthetic experience broaching the ordinary and the everyday. This group exhibition featured one or two pieces by each artist as well as craft objects such as an oil valve from an oil drilling rig.
These everyday objects or the everyday activity of these artists make connections to issues of realism in art which go beyond fine art practice and seek to raise issues of value judgement and category definition. The exhibition included a symposium to debate possibilities of tacit knowledge phenomenology and experience-based aesthetics arising from the writings of the philosopher Richard Shusterman.
Artists included Tony Benn, Luke Jackson, Sam Jackson, Zebedee Jones, Chris Stevens, Jo Stockham, Amikan Toren, Suzanne Treister, John Wilkins.
