Clinical Expertise

  • Management of all types of benign and malignant breast disease including newer techniques of sentinel lymph node biopsy, oncoplastic surgery and breast reconstruction (in conjunction with plastic surgeons).

Research Interest

  • Mechanisms of carcinogenesis in breast cancer and the role of growth factors in mediation of therapeutic responses.
  • Endocrine and biological strategies for treatment and prevention of breast cancer (SERMS - selective oestrogen receptor modulators).
  • Patient participation in clinical trials (informed consent, trial recruitment and monitoring of patients within trials).
  • Evaluation of the role of sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer - current approaches for incorporation into routine clinical practice (in the context of neoadjuvant chemotherapy, mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction, ductal carcinoma in situ, intra-operative node assessment, completion axillary lymph node dissection).

Education Interests

  • John has an active interest in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and am one of the Regional Breast Tutors appointed by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. John is the Director of Clinical Studies at Selwyn College with responsibility for guiding and supervising medical students during their period of clinical training at Addenbrooke's and regional hospitals. John regularly examine both for the Cambridge Clinical School and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
