Hip resurfacing

This project focuses on the stability of metal-on-metal hip resurfacing arthroplasty, using finite element method and in-vitro testing. The aim is to understand the stress distribution on the cement mantle and on the cancellous bone to avoid fatigue failures or stress shielding for the long-term success of the prostheses. Preliminary investigations involved comparison different fixation techniques, using computer simulations. The effect of degenerative bone on the stability of the femoral component was also compared. The figure shows peak stresses occur in the cement mantle at the ring of the femoral component, which agrees with clinical studies. Stress concentration point at the tip of the femoral peg, which could be responsible for radiolucency lines in some prostheses.
