Celebrating the Politics and Life of George Lansbury
In 2008-2009 the LHRU made a major contribution to the 'George Lansbury MP (1859-1940) Anniversary', which marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Christian socialist pioneer and pacifist Leader of the British Labour Party (1931-35). In February 2009 four well-attended events were organised with the official George Lansbury Anniversary Committee in London: 'A Radical Bow History Walk' around his East End constituency, a memorial service at St Mary's Church and panel discussions at the House of Lords and at Bromley Public Hall in Bow.
The chairs for this event were Michael White, Greg Rosen and Nigel Whiskin MBE, and the speakers included Tony Benn, Professor Mary Davis, Roy Hattersley, Bob Holman, Bruce Kent, Reverend Dr Kenneth Leech, Alun Michael MP, Reverend Michael Peet, Professor John Shepherd and Chris Sumner.
