Britain's Second Labour Government 1929-31: A Reappraisal
Date: Friday 29 May 2009
Time: 9.30am - 5.30pm
Venue: Helmore 251, Anglia Ruskin University, Cambridge, East Road, CB1 1PT
The second Labour Government has enjoyed a spectacularly bad press in Labour History since its demise in 1931. Critics on the right and the left have questioned the administration's fitness to govern and highlighted its betrayal of its own supporters.
This one-day conference marked the eightieth anniversary of the Government's election in 1929 and considered an impressive recent wave of new research in Labour History. With the current global economic turndown, this event also provided a timely occasion to reassess Ramsay MacDonald's Government, which collapsed during the world economic crisis following the Wall Street Crash.
The conference was a huge success, enjoying a great turn-out and even featuring on the BBC News website.
Speakers included John Callaghan, Richard Carr, Clare Griffiths, David Marquand, Daniel Ritschell, Nicole Robertson, Duncan Tanner, Robert Taylor, Geraint Thomas, Andrew Thorpe, Steve Woodhams, Chris Wrigley.
