Hajah Rokiah Binte Haji Zakiah is the Director of the College of Nursing, Brunei Darussalam. She began her nursing training at West Middlesex Hospital, London, and after post-registration experience in midwifery at Hammersmith Hospital, continued her professional development at the Royal College of Nursing. In 1991 she gained her Master of Nursing at the College of Medicine, University of Wales. Throughout her career, she has been committed to the development of professional standards within nursing, to training and to the importance of academic achievement, and she has become the acknowledged leader of the nursing profession within her native Brunei. She has had a significant influence on the development of health services within Brunei, publishing a number of papers on health service policy, strategy and on operational issues.

In 1995 Hajah Rokiah Binte Haji Zakiah was made an Honorary Fellow of the University.

"Hajah Rokiah Binte Haji Zakiah is the Principal of the College of Nursing, Brunei Darussalam. Her name is synonymous with the progress of nursing in Brunei Darussalam. For over 20 years now, Hajah Rokiah has made major contributions to the development of nursing in her own country and in the wider international world. She trained at the West Middlesex Hospital, London and following post-registration experience in midwifery at Hammersmith Hospital (the Royal Postgraduate Medical Centre of excellence in the world); she continued her professional development at the Royal College of Nursing in London.

Hajah Rokiah's belief in the intellectual rigour of nursing as a discipline was underpinned by her period as a post-graduate student at the College of Medicine, University of Wales, where she gained a Master of Nursing in 1991. She is currently undertaking doctoral research into aspects of implementing a Diploma Programme for nurses in Brunei Darussalam.

The link between Anglia and the Brunei College of Nursing has grown from strength to strength over the past four years, principally due to the support of commitment of Hajah Rokiah.

As the acknowledged leader of nursing in her own country, Hajah Rokiah has been an innovator and an informed contributor to the development of the health services. She has presented major papers setting out her views and ideas on various aspects of health services policy, strategy and operational issues. She initiated and successfully implemented a plan for an international conference on 'Education for Caring' - the first of its kind in Brunei Darussalam.

Chancellor, in recognition of the enormous contributions of Hajah Rokiah to the development of nursing in her own country, regionally in the far East and globally world-wide, I present to you for the award of the University Fellowship, Brunei Darussalam's outstanding nurse - Hajah Rokiah Binte Haji Zakiah."
