Citation:
"Jack Smale was born and educated in Chelmsford. His professional career has been spent in the construction industry including 35 years with the long-established Essex company Frederick J French as part owner and Managing Director.

Jack has taken a lifelong interest in education, training and professional matters holding offices as Chairman of Eastern Region Chartered Institute of Building and the Building Employers Confederation.

Jack was a student of the former Mid-Essex Technical College whose buildings are now part of the University - indeed he was a student on its first intake to its new Building Department in 1942. Throughout his life he has retained close ties with this part of the university - he lectured part-time in the college for 10 years and from 1960 to 1990 was a member and then Chairman of its Building Advisory Committee. He returned as a mature student in 1968 to study for his Diploma in Management Studies.

During the last two years, Jack has been a Director of Anglia Polytechnic University Development Ltd, responsible for the development of the new Rivermead Campus. Its magnificent new library was built successfully on an impossibly short time scale - a feat which probably would not have been achieved without the countless hours he has devoted to the project.

The University owes Jack Richard Smale a great debt of gratitude and it is a pleasure to recognise his contribution by asking him to accept an Honorary Fellowship of the University."
