Citation:

"Tony Newton has been the Conservative MP for Braintree since February 1974. Educated at the Friends School, Saffron Walden and Trinity College, Oxford, he graduated in Politics, Philosophy and Economics having, during his time at college, been President of the Oxford Union. He spent some 10 years in the Conservative Research Department's Economics Unit before his election in 1974. Much of his Ministerial and Cabinet career has been in Social Security, Health and the Disabled, although he has also been Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister of Trade and Industry prior to assuming his current responsibilities as Leader of the House of Commons.

Despite his ministerial workload, Tony is renowned as a superb, caring and committed constituency MP and can always be relied upon for the strongest support for Essex projects, which further the economic, social and cultural life of the community.

Today, in particular, the University welcomes the opportunity to thank Tony Newton publicly for the tireless support and encouragement over 15 years which he has given to the goal of establishing Anglia with its strong regional purpose.

It is therefore with great pleasure that the University confers on the Rt Hon Tony Newton the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Philosophy."
