Prof Peter Matthews began his career as a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry but switched to the water industry, progressing through the ranks of the Scientific Branch of Greater London Council and Anglian Water to become Deputy Managing Director of Anglian Water International. He worked in a number of roles within Anglian Water Group, serving as a board member of several of the Group's subsidiaries, both in the UK and overseas. After leaving Anglian Water in 1999, he joined the board of the Environment Agency and when that appointment was completed he joined the board of the Port of London Authority in 2006, and was made Chair of the Northern Ireland Authority for Utility Regulation in the same year. He has been Visiting Professor of Civil Engineering at Imperial College, University of London, and is currently a Visiting Professor at Anglia Ruskin in the Faculty of Science and Technology. Peter has been involved with our University for many years, in joint research and the presentation of prizes, but went on to become a board Member for almost ten years, retiring in October 2007. He was also Chair of our Audit Committee.

In 1995 Peter Matthews was made an Honorary Doctor of Science.

"The Senate of Anglia Polytechnic University has great pleasure in awarding Dr Peter Matthews an Honorary Doctor of Science.

Dr Peter Matthews started his professional career as a chemist in the pharmaceutical industry and obtained his PhD on the chemistry of boron in environmental waters. With this began his association with the water industry. Starting in the Scientific Branch of Greater London Council, via a number of high profile jobs including Director of Innovation, in which he oversees innovation, exploitation and business change throughout the company. He is also a Board Member of several of Anglian Water Group's subsidiaries in Britain, as well as in the United States and Scandinavia. He is visiting Professor of Civil Engineering at Imperial College, University of London, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, Fellow of the Institution of Water and Environmental Management and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Throughout his distinguished career he has maintained his contacts with Anglia in its various manifestations, conducting joint research, presenting prizes and providing prizes through his position in the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The Honorary Doctorate of Science is awarded by the Senate in recognition of Dr Matthews' distinguished career and for the interest he has shown in the work of the University over many years."
