Born in Leytonstone in 1944, John Lill is a classical pianist of international repute. He gave his first piano recital at the age of nine and by eighteen was performing Rachmaninoff's 3rd Piano Concerto under Sir Adrian Boult. He first came to the attention of international audiences when he won the prestigious Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1970, and was soon performing around the world, working with Barbirolli, Svetlanov and Rozhdestvensky. John has performed in over 50 countries and has worked with the New York and Boston Symphony Orchestras, in addition to all of the major orchestras in Great Britain. His repertoire includes more than 70 concertos, though he is particularly recognised for his interpretations of Beethoven. He has recorded with Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, ASV and Pickwick Records, and in 1993 recorded Malcolm Arnold's Fantasy on a Theme of John Field (dedicated to John Lill). He was awarded an OBE in 1978 and a CBE in 2005.

In 1994 John Lill was made an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy.
